Roles and Permissions in Drive

Roles and Permissions in Drive

Drive uses role-based access to determine what each workspace member can do with files and folders.

Roles in Drive

Role
What you can do
Owner
Full control — upload, edit, share, and delete. Can transfer ownership of files and folders owned by others.
Manager
Upload, edit, share and delete files.
Editor
Add and edit files and folders within the shared location.
Viewer
View files and folders only. Cannot make changes or share.

How roles are assigned

When you upload or create a file, you are its Owner. When someone shares a file or folder with you, they assign you a role — Editor, Manager or Viewer. If no role is assigned to you directly, you inherit the role from the parent folder.

Access is private by default

Files and folders in Drive are private until you share them. Only members you explicitly share with — or members of a shared team — can access them.

Deleting files

Only the Owner of a file can permanently delete it. If a file is shared with you, you can remove it from your view, but you cannot delete it for others.
